The Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) announces the MSGC Pre-College Education Program.
This award program is designed to promote projects that encourage and enrich the study of mathematics, science, or technology for K-12 students. Preference is given to projects focusing on aerospace, space or Earth system science. Eligible projects include development, implementation, and/or testing of activities or supplementary resources that meet the National Standards for Mathematics, Science and Technology education as well as State educational requirements. Activities may include both in-classroom work as well as informal programs occurring outside the classroom (but must be associated with one or more pre-college institutions). One-time single event activities receive a lower priority in the selection process. Note: the mission of the MSGC includes creating, developing, and promoting programs that reflect NASA strategic interests. Programs targeted to women, under-represented minorities, and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged.

Augmented support is available for Pre-College Education proposals targeted toward the recruitment and retention of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. To be considered for an augmentation, not to exceed $5,000, please provide an additional page describing in detail why these funds are necessary to assure the success of your project. Augmented funding is limited to one proposal per applicant.

This award program is designed to support conferences, workshops, publications, lecture series, non-technical courses, science fairs, radio and television programs, and other enrichment events that serve industry, state and local governments, non-profit organizations, children, and adults with a focus on enhancing literacy and interest in mathematics, science, and technology. Preference is given to projects focusing on aerospace, space or Earth system science. Note: the mission of the MSGC includes creating, developing, and promoting programs that reflect NASA strategic interests. Programs targeted to women, under-represented minorities, and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged.

Augmented support is available for Public Outreach proposals targeted toward the recruitment and retention of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. To be considered for an augmentation, not to exceed $5,000, please provide an additional page describing in detail why these funds are necessary to assure the success of your project. Augmented funding is limited to one proposal per applicant.

The Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) announces the MSGC Teacher Training Program.
This award program is designed to promote innovative higher education of pre-service and in-service teacher training in mathematics, science, and/or technology in aerospace, space or Earth system science. Eligible activities include the development of courses and supplementary materials, entry level gateway courses, conferences and workshops for in-service and pre-service teacher education. Note: the mission of the MSGC includes creating, developing, and promoting programs that reflect NASA strategic interests. Programs targeted to women, underrepresented minorities and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged.

Augmented support is available for Teacher Training proposals targeted toward the recruitment and retention of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. To be considered for an augmentation, not to exceed $5,000, please provide an additional page describing in detail why these funds are necessary to assure the success of your project. Augmented funding is limited to one proposal per applicant.

Submission Requirements for the Pre-College Education, Public Outreach, and Teacher Training Programs:
Both the Pre-College Education Program and the Public Outreach Program are open to state-wide participation from members of the MSGC as well as representatives from other non-sectarian educational or community organizations. Applicants currently funded through these programs are welcome to reapply for continuation funding. The Teacher Training Program is open only to faculty and administrators at MSGC affiliate and lead institutions. Applicants currently funded through these programs are welcome to reapply for continuation funding.

Funds may be used for salary, supplies, and minimal travel, but may not be used to purchase equipment. At least 1:1 cost matching (cash contributions or in- kind support) with non-federal funds is required. Indirect costs are not allowed on MSGC funds, although they may be considered as a component of the matching funds. Please contact your local MSGC Affiliate Representative or the MSGC Director’s Office for suggestions on the budget and budget justifications.

Applicants are encouraged to propose collaborative efforts that include partners from colleges and universities, business and industry, K-12 educational institutions, and/or community groups. All projects must include plans for evaluation, the results of which should be included in the project final report.

Selection of awards will be based on the relevance of proposals to MSGC objectives, qualifications of the applicant, the degree of partnering, and programmatic balance.

To apply (to any of these programs) the standard MSGC package is required that must include:

  1. a completed online application form signed with your full name (typed in the appropriate box) indicating the affiliate representative on your campus (if one exists) reviewed and approved your proposal for submission
  2. an abstract not to exceed 150 words
  3. a description of the project and its relevance to MSGC objectives: maximum length 4 pages with one extra page allowed if an augmentation has been requested
  4. one-paragraph descriptions of the qualifications of each of the key personnel
  5. a budget and budget justification (including a detailed description of the sources of the cost matching)
  6. If applying for continuation funds, a report on progress during the current project is required. Proposals for continuation funding should include a report on their activities during the current year, and evaluation results of the various components of the program. Proposers are allotted an additional two pages for the text of this report, and should include documentation of any papers, presentations, announcements, news articles and press releases relating to the existing project as an appendix.
In general, a maximum award amount of $5,000 (not including matching funds) will be allowed. Exceptional projects that meet the requirements of other MSGC Programs may apply simultaneously to one or more programs. In this case, the maximum award amount will be $5,000 per Program and the description may not exceed five pages. Applications for these exceptional projects should justify the additional resources needed based on the scale of the project and clearly indicate which Programs they are applying to on this application form.

Reporting Requirements for Awardees
Awardees will be required to submit a 1–3 page interim report on their project six months after the start of funding, and a 2–5 page final report within one month of project completion. Selected final reports may be published in the MSGC Newsletter, Michigan in Space. Representatives from selected projects may also be requested to make a presentation at the annual MSGC Conference. Awardees are required to submit data for MSGC financial reporting. These financial reports cannot be used as project reports.

Applicants can propose individual projects to any of the three programs (Pre-College Education, Public Outreach, or Teacher Training) or can propose one project to multiple programs simultaneously, depending on the scope and relevance of their project. A detailed budget specifically describing how the funds will be used is required.
